Saturday Race Day FAQs
How do I pick up our race items (race number, shirt and goody bag)?
Kids of Steel sites have the option to receive their students' race numbers and t-shirts for the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon prior to race day. If your child attends a Kids of Steel site, stay tuned for more information if your coach is participating in site packet pick up. Specific details will be sent to coaches in April.
Kids and families participating outside of a Kids of Steel site/at a site not participating in early pick up can:
- Visit the Expo at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center during Marathon weekend.
- Visit the 5K/Kids Marathon packet pick-up tent on race morning during Marathon weekend. Please check our web site, kidsofsteeel.org, this spring for more information about location.
Please note shirts are for kid runners only and are first come, first serve. Kids who wear an adult size should email email@example.com. Only race finishers will receive a finisher medal.
What time do the events start?
- The UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run starts at 8:00 AM.
- The first Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot Heat starts at 8:30 AM.
- The first Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon heat starts at 9:30 AM. Race heat assignments are posted at https://kidsofsteel.org/kidsmarathon

What should we bring on race morning?
1. Race number - Please complete the parent/guardian contact information on the back of your child’s race number before race day. Race numbers need to be pinned to the front of the shirt.
2. Hydration - there are no water stops on the Kids Marathon course. We will have water available for runners in the Finish Line area. You are welcome to bring your own hydration for your run.
3. Photo of your child in race day attire (recommended)- take a picture of your child with your cell phone that morning. If you and your child become separated, you can show the photo to race officials.
What fun stuff is available after the race?
Join us after the race for the Finish Line Festival in Point State Park. This family-friendly festival features an inflatable obstacle course and sports games, refreshments, special guests and more!
My child is not part of Kids of Steel. Can they still run in the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon?
Yes! About 30 percent of runners on race day are running without a team, so the race is designed to give everyone the same great experience. Runners without a team will be part of heats 6 and 7.
How do Kids Marathon race numbers work? Do I register for the Kids Marathon as an adult?
Each child will receive two race numbers whether you listed an adult was running with him/her or not. The numbers will match so you can leave the Kids Marathon Family Reunion Area quicker. Once you exit the corral, you cannot re-enter. Additional information on the Kids Marathon Family Reunion will be shared via email closer to the event to registered runners prior to the event.
Is the Kids Marathon a timed race?
No. If your child's time is important to him/her, please use a watch or phone app to keep track of the time.
Are strollers, bikes or animals permitted on the course?
No. For safety reasons, strollers, bikes and animals are not allowed on the course.
What do I do with my child’s completed Kids of STEEL training log?
Logs can be turned in at packet pick up or to your Kids of Steel site contact. Ask your coach for more details.
How do I run with my child at the 5K?
Anybody who wants to run in the 5K must pay and register for the event.
Unlike the Kids Marathon, an adult entry is not included. All 5K runners will receive a shirt, goody bag and medal. Please make a plan in the event that you are separated from your child and/or for after the race. The 5K does not have the same matching bib and screening for guardians as the Kids Marathon.

Can I run with my child/children in the Kids Marathon?

Each child will receive two race numbers whether you listed an adult was running with him/her or not. The numbers will match so you can leave the Kids Marathon Family Reunion Area quicker. Adults can run with multiple children (for example, a mom with her two children) as long as the adult is wearing all of the matching bibs (mom running with her two children will be wearing two race bibs: one for each child.)
Once you exit the corral, you cannot re-enter. Please make a plan to meet your child in the designated waiting areas in the chute.

If a second adult wants to participate with their child, additional adult entries are available for $10:

For the safety of all participants, all children and adults who want to be in the race corrals must have a Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon race number. You will not be allowed into the corrals without a Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon race number. Even if you are waiting with a child who will run by themselves, you must wear the adult race number provided with your child's race number to access corrals. If your child is running without an adult - please be sure to detach the ‘Kid Claim’ tag from the bottom of your child's race number before the start of the race. See below for finish line details.
Kids participating with their school should look for the grown-ups holding their school sign.
Finish line details:
The race finishes downtown at the Boulevard of the Allies between Wood and Market Streets.
As runners proceed through the Finish Line chute, there is a Family Reunion Area at the end. This is the area where volunteers will make sure children are released to a designated parent/guardian. Whether you run with your child OR you will wait for him/her at the end, all adults will need to show the corresponding race number to leave the chute with their child.
Accompanying adults will wear the race number that matches the child's number. Adults accompanying multiple children are required to have a ‘Kids Claim’ tag for each child in order to exit the Family Reunion Area.
If your child is running without an adult - please be sure to detach the ‘Kid Claim’ tag from the bottom of your child's race number before the start of the race. Adults are required to provide the 'Kids Claim' tag to appropriate race volunteers in order for your child to exit the Family Reunion Area. Adults reuniting with more than one child is required to provide the ‘Kids Claim’ tag for each child in order to exit the Family Reunion Area.
Your child’s safety is our priority. Please be patient with our family reunion process and follow the directions of the volunteers.
