Questions about Kids of STEEL and Races

What is the difference between Kids of Steel and the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon?

Kids of Steel is the overall youth exercise program. Kids, through a variety of programming and training options, run 25 training miles and then complete the Kids Marathon during Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend with a 1.2 mile course with 6500 kids from throughout the region! 25+1.2 = 26.2 – the length of a full marathon. The Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon is open to all. You also do not have to complete the Kids of Steel program to participate in the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon.

So, what is the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon?

A celebration of setting and reaching new goals, the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon is one of the largest kids races in the country! It is a 1.2 mile, untimed fun run. The Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Marathon is the culminating event for the spring Kids of Steel program.

What other family friendly races take place on the same day as the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon?

Kids looking for a timed event or a longer distance are welcomed to register for the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run. For children ages 2-4, please consider the Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot, which will also be held on May 4, 2019.

How can I track my miles?

See how far you go by tracking your miles online at http://bit.ly/koslog or the mileage log provided by your team coach, which is available for download at kidsofsteel.org.

When should I start the Kids of Steel program?

Our resources are flexible, but we recommend an early February start date for 5K training and a late February/early March start date for the Kids Marathon training.

How do I pick up our race items (race number, shirt and goody bag)?

Kids of Steel sites have the option to receive their students' race numbers and t-shirts prior to race day. If your child attends a Kids of Steel site, stay tuned for more information if your coach is participating in site packet pick up. Specific details will be sent to coaches in April.

Kids and families participating outside of a Kids of Steel site/at a site not participating in early pick up can:

  • Visit the Expo at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center during Marathon weekend. Look for the UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run booth.
  • Visit the 5K/Kids Marathon packet pick-up tent on race morning during Marathon weekend. Please check our web site, kidsofsteeel.org, this spring for more information about location.

Please note shirts are for kid runners only and are first come, first serve. Only race finishers will receive a finisher medal.

What time do the events start?

The UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run starts at 8:00 AM.

The first Chick-fil-A Kids Marathon heat starts at 9:30 AM. Race heat assignments will be announced in April.

The first Sheetz Toddler Trot Heat starts at 8:30 AM.

Please check pittsburghmarathon.com for more information and to register.

What should we bring on race morning?

  • Race number - Please complete the parent/guardian contact information on the back of your child’s race number before race day.  Race numbers need to be pinned to the front of the shirt.
  •   Hydration - there are no water stops on the Kids Marathon course. We will have water available for runners in the Finish Line area. You are welcome to bring your own hydration for your run.
  • Photo of your child in race day attire (recommended)- take a picture of your child with your cell phone that morning. If you and your child become separated, you can show the photo to race officials.

What fun stuff is available after the race?

Join us after the race for the Finish Line Festival in Point State Park. This family-friendly festival features an inflatable obstacle course and sports games, refreshments, special guests and more!

How do Kids Marathon race numbers work?

Each child will receive two race numbers whether you listed an adult was running with him/her or not. The numbers will match so you can leave the Kids Marathon Family Reunion Area quicker. If you will not run with your child but would like to wait with them in the corral before the race, please make sure you wear the adult number to access the corral. Once you exit the corral, you cannot re-enter. Additional information on the Kids Marathon Family Reunion will be shared via email closer to the event to registered runners prior to the event.
