Questions about Kids of STEEL

What is the difference between Kids of STEEL and the Kids Marathon?

  • Kids of STEEL is a youth physical activity and nutrition program that provides training plans geared toward age-appropriate exercise and healthy eating habits. Each plan consists of a physical activity goal and a nutrition goal. Children complete their goals, track them on their training log, and turn that log in for a finishers prize.  You can sign up for Kids of STEEL and not participate in a race.
  • The Toyota Pittsburgh Kids Marathon is one of three races that children can participate in during the DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events each year. This year's Kids Marathon is Saturday, May 5, 2018. You can participate in a race and not sign up for Kids of STEEL.

I have at least one child attending a Kids of STEEL site that my other children don’t attend.  Can we list them at the same site when we register?
Yes!  Please let your child’s site coordinator know if you list siblings with their site.

What do I do with my child’s completed Kids of STEEL training log?
Details on how to turn in logs based on the training season (spring, summer or fall) can be found on the bottom of the log. During the Spring program, logs can be turned in on race day OR to your Kids of STEEL site coordinator. Ask your coordinator for more details.

Questions about Race Day - Kids Marathon

Can I run with my child/children?
Yes! Each child is allowed one (1) adult to run with them for FREE. During the registration process, please choose YES when asked if an adult will run with registrant on race day.
If a second adult wants to participate with their child, additional adult entries are available for $10 at the Toyota Pittsburgh Kids Marathon booth located with the GNC Live Well Pittsburgh Health and Fitness Expo on Friday, May 4 and Saturday May 5 at the Packet Pickup booth near the start line on the North Shore. Proceeds benefit race registrations for underprivileged children.

How do Kids Marathon race numbers work?
Each child will receive two race numbers no matter whether you said an adult was running with him/her or not. One race number will be for the child to wear, one race number will be for the adult to wear. The numbers will match so you can leave the Kids Marathon Family Reunion Area quicker. If you will not run with your child but would like to wait with them in the corral before the race, please make sure you wear the adult number to access the corral.

What is the Kids Marathon Family Reunion Area?
As runners proceed through the Finish Line chute, there is a Family Reunion Area at the end. This is the area where volunteers will make sure children are released to a designated parent/guardian. Whether you run with your child OR you will wait for him/her at the end, all adults will need to show the corresponding race number to "claim" the child.

Below are two options for claiming your child:
  • If you are running with a child - accompanying adults will wear the race number that matches the child's number. Adults accompanying multiple children are required to have a ‘Kids Claim’ tag for each child in order to exit the Family Reunion Area.
  • If your child is running without an adult - please be sure to detach the ‘Kid Claim’ tag from the bottom of your child's race number before the start of the race. Adults are required to provide the 'Kids Claim' tag to appropriate race volunteers in order for your child to exit the Family Reunion Area. Adults reuniting with more than one child is required to provide the ‘Kids Claim’ tag for each child in order to exit the Family Reunion Area.
YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY IS OUR PRIORITY.  PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH OUR CHILD CLAIM PROCESS AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS OF THE FAMILY REUNION VOLUNTEERS.

Where do I pick up my child's race number and shirt? Do I get a shirt too?
Kids of STEEL sites have the option to receive their students' race numbers and t-shirts prior to race day. If your child attends a Kids of STEEL site, please check with your site coordinator to see if they will be taking advantage of this option.
If your child’s Kids of STEEL site is not distributing items, or your child doesn’t attend a Kids of STEEL site, you have two options:

Shirts, medals and goody bags are only for registered children. Adults receive the priceless family memory!
